Stephen Fry is quite literally the funniest man in the world. Well, that may be a little biased. This second autobiography explores his late teens, college years, and post-graduate life. It explores his turbulent coming-of-age years and his addiction to sugar. Yes, sugar. Naturally, it ends on a cliffhanger. A cliffhanger. In an autobiography.

This book provided a profound glimpse into the reality of post-911 racism with a backdrop of Hurricane Katrina. In this true story, Eggers follows the life of Abdulrammah Zeitoun, a Syrian Muslim who has made a significant name for himself in New Orleans through his painting/contracting business. He decides to stay behind when Katrina hits, in order to maintain and keep care of all the properties he owns, and ends up acting as a caretaker and savior to those stranded or left behind. After doing so much good, he is randomly arrested and hidden away in a secret prison, off the radar, where he undergoes treatment no innocent man should endure - because he is a Muslim.

Better than Gatsby. It is technically fiction, and about a young man named Amory Blaine. But we all know it's really about Fitzgerald himself...

Hamlet as told from the comedic perspective of Rosencrantz & Guildenstern. We follow the storyline of the original Shakespearean tragedy in the background, while the title characters, through nothing short of buffoonery, try to do something...anything. This is a hilarious, existential exploration of characters with no purpose trying to find their purpose.

Chad Harbach's first novel is a home run. Yes, I had to add a baseball analogy. It's simple, touching, emotional, entertaining, and fun. The story follows primarily Henry Skrimshander, an almost perfect shortstop recruited for Westish College, as he grows and perfects his game throughout college. Or does he? We also follow Mike Schwartz, Westish catcher and mentor to Henry, who seems to always help other people achieve their goals while letting his own fall away; Westish President Guert Affenlight, who has a deep secret love interest; and Pella Affenlight, the President's daughter, who has come to Westish to escape the reality she has created for herself. Not since Franzen's Freedom have I read a more powerful and interesting novel that I truly cared about.

The most unique, creative, thought-provoking YA title of the year. Michael Grant simply knows how to entertain, enthrall, and frighten readers, all the while providing a highly thematic and philosophically profound storyline. This isn't your typical book of the genre, it feels more like a genuine hard-sci-fi novel.
